Cigarettes on Campus
I believe that you should be able to smoke tobacco on the campus of Delaware County Community College. I only smoke cigarettes on occasion, but i feel like taking away the freedom to relieve stress for most students isn't right. My older brother used to go to DCCC about 5 years ago, and he said when he would walk through the court yard there would be dozens of groups of people smoking. Now in my first year, there is no one smoking because of the new rule.
Whenever I am looking for a parking spot in the morning I always see a couple people around or inside their cars looking out for campus security. By the time I even make it to my car, smoke a cigarette, and then walk back to class, i'm ready to pass out from shortness of breath. That's why i just want to step outside the STEM building to enjoy a cigarette.
My one friend got caught smoking in the parking lot 3 times in the first 2 weeks of the school year. I think she got fines but i'm not exactly sure. All i know is she had a meeting with the dean in the second week of her college career. I don't think anyone would want to do that.
I can understand the other side of the argument saying why it should be a tobacco free campus. For example it would be all you smell in the courtyard and for people who don't smoke it is probably very irritating. Also, there would be people every where outside, even though that's not that big of a deal. Whenever I go to a college besides DCCC, there is always people smoking outside of dormitories or wherever. There is no reason why only Delaware County should not let kids smoke. I think they should at least make a roped off section of the campus somewhere in a corner where you can go an smoke. Even Phillies, Flyers, and Eagles games there is somewhere to spark up. If you really don't like the smell of it, then you can avoid it by walking through the buildings.
I personally think if it is that big of a deal to smoke, then the students should take a vote to either ban cigarettes or to bring them back onto the campus. Then you will really know if people hate them and need to get rid of them that much. I have even talked to people to don't smoke at all and they miss when you'd be able to hangout with everyone smoking in the courtyard on break because there was nothing else to do. I had the chance too say this to the Dean or whoever's idea it was to ban tobacco, i hope would be able to change their minds.
